re: children. the ones left behind.
quest for the ultimate list song
...this morning, i got a nice email from the staff at a literary journal telling me that my poems had survived the first (second? third?) round of cuts. i don't know how i feel about this practice of informing poets halfway through the decision-making process, but i take it to mean, "even if we don't choose these pieces, we like you enough to want to see more for next year."
...i've been thinking about the second reading period for taiga. doors open mid-june. i know that we won't be able to sustain our nine day response streak, or whatever it is, reported to duotrope. i mean, we will if we're declining something, but if we might want to accept it? last reading period was from november to the end of february. i think this one will be from mid-june to mid-august. poets are on summer break, and i suspect that once classes start again (whether they're taking them or teaching them), the submissions will slow down, anyway. however, lots of journals don't accept submissions through the summer, and i don't know about others, but that makes me feel pretty antsy.
none of this has been announced officially, of course. details will be nailed down, and information will be posted on our blog and sent in a message on facebook at the beginning of june, so pay attention!
...so, i'm on a quest this morning for the ultimate list song. billy joel and r.e.m. don't count because i pretty much grind my teeth flat any time i hear "we didn't start the fire" or "it's the end of the world as we know it"... also, billy joel should never top any lists. bleh.
...that leaves me with def leppard's "rocket"... this song is terrible, and, because i'm a pathetic glam-ho, i know all the words. my quest for a song that doesn't suck continues. obviously.

jenny factor
i was wondering what'd happened to jenny "sippy cup" factor. recently, i was involved in a late-night game that involved a beach ball and a whale-shaped sippy cup full of strawberry wine. without being around small children, words like "sippy cup" kinda fade from your vocabulary. "song beside a sippy cup" -for being such a simple ditty of a poem- made a huge impression on me when i was nineteen years old and beginning to study contemporary poetry with the intention of writing it, myself. luckily, the poem is also available online in a beloit poetry journal pdf. but jenny factor appears to have slipped off the grid after 2003...
